My cat chews on wires, wood, and ash..... is this harmful?

A lot of the time I find my cat in the fireplace (when the fire is out) licking ash. He also chews on the wooden part of pencils and baskets. Sometimes I find him chewing wire. He is neutered. What is going on? Is this dangerous?
