What happened when Nixon went to China?

I was looking at a slideshow and it said "Nixon visited communist China, restoring relations between the two nations." for a caption of him at the Great Wall... what happened when he was in China? Like, who was he with? How exactly did he restore relations? Sorry, I'm dumb.
