I am a senior in high school and my parents are on the brink of bankruptcy. Do I have a chance at college?
Of course you do. Their bankruptcy will not impact your admission to college, although it may may impact you being able to have your parents obtain a PLUS loan if you need one, or them co-signing a private loan for you. Federal regulations will allow you to take another $4000 in unsubsidized loans if your parents cannot qualify for a PLUS for credit reasons, but think twice about taking on too much student loan debt of your own. Consider a more local, less expensive state or community college to make the cost more reasonable for you and them, and the possibility of attending part time and working part time. You should file for financial aid, although their bankruptcy will not have a bearing on the information you must provide. You may be able to appeal to the college's financial aid office for consideration of extenuating cirstances as well.
