My car is overheating!?

i got a honda prelude 89, i was in heavy traffic today and the temperature gage kept getting higher and higher, almost at the tippy top not in the red tho. it got really really scared, no smoke or anything or leaking. i put water in it, what do u think the problem is? it mostly happens when im stopped, then when i get moving it goes down a bit
