How does the voltaic pile work?

how does the voltaic pile work? I have done some research and all i have found out about this is what it was made of when it was first invented. It was reated from Zinc/Silver, Copper, and cloth soaked in salt water, or weak sulfuric acid. How does it work? Where does the electric current start and how does it come about? thanks!
